NMU has both a diversity committee and a chief diversity and inclusion officer.

The 25-person Committee on Diversity represents students, faculty and staff of Northern Michigan University. The committee in its current format was created in the Fall of 2012. Previously it was known as the Ethnic Culture Diversity Committee (ECDC). The revised committee now includes a wider representation across the university and into the local community, alumni base and supporters of NMU. A goal of the committee is to heighten the awareness of diversity and increase inclusion opportunities throughout NMU and the Upper Peninsula.

The Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Northern Michigan University, Jessica Cruz, reports directly to the President.

The Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) leads the development and implementation of the University’s diversity and inclusion strategic plan, enabling Northern to achieve its overall mission. Working collaboratively with the President, President’s Leadership Team, Deans, Department Heads, faculty, staff, students and other key campus partners, the CDIO guides the development, alignment and assessment of strategies that enhance diversity and make Northern Michigan University an even more inclusive living, learning, and working environment.

The Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer manages, oversees, and partners with programs, activities, and initiatives designed to foster a climate that promotes and respects diversity and inclusion. The CDIO defines, assesses and advocates for diversity at the institution. Responsibilities include helping to attract and retain a diverse student, faculty, and staff population; promoting success for all students, especially underrepresented segments of the population; creating opportunities to engage diverse ideas inside and outside the classroom; providing programs, services, and training that emphasize the importance of a diverse and inclusive campus environment; partnering with community groups and organizations to support diversity and inclusion in the broader community; and leading the celebration of diversity and inclusion effort successes. The CDIO chairs the President’s Committee on Diversity and serves on the President’s Leadership Team and President’s Council.
