Is the institution formally designated as a minority-serving institution, historically disadvantaged institution, indigenous institution, or the equivalent?:
No

A brief description of the institution’s formal designation:

Northland College maintains a strong relationship with the Ojibwe people of the area through The Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), which represents eleven Ojibwe tribes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The College and its faculty are actively involved in a broad spectrum of resource-related programs aimed at protecting and enhancing the natural resources and habitat in the treaty-ceded territories. Some of the projects focus on climate change, forest pests, invasive species, mercury levels, mining, wildlife, and others.

The College was originally founded in collaboration with the local indigenous people and protectively maintains this connection. With need-based scholarships and outreach through the Indigenous Cultures Center, the College is successful in allowing some of the tribe people to attend and graduate from college.

However, despite its strong relationship with local indigenous tribes, the College is not formally designated as a minority-serving institution.
