A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:

The Department of Campus Inclusion and Community aims to “cultivate inclusive learning environments through the intentional engagement with difference across and within various identities.” The Department achieves this mission through leading dialogues, running leadership development opportunities and trainings, and advocating for underrepresented students.

The University Diversity Council (UDC) is responsible for addressing a wide range of diversity and inclusion-related issues and is comprised of faculty, students, staff, and alumni. It oversees five working groups with specific diversity/inclusion objectives. The working groups are Academics/Education, Faculty Recruitment and Retention, Campus Life, Pipeline, and Lifetime Connections. The Council will also report annually to the University community on the status of diversity and inclusion efforts at Northwestern.

A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

Campus Inclusion and Community (CIC) offers several training workshops to any member of the campus community, including offices, student organizations and more. The training workshops can be centered on cultural competency education, step up bystander intervention, inclusion, or another topic. This fall, the CIC launched a social justice training program for student groups, as well. All members of the student government executive board and all student senators have been required to attend the training. Greek leaders are also required to undergo diversity and inclusion training.

The Feinberg Office of Diversity works with students, residents, staff, and faculty to further a campus environment of belonging and inclusion for all. Through mentoring programs, community partnership, recruitment initiatives, safe space training and inter-campus cooperation and collaboration, the office strives to help facilitate success in every domain.
