In February 2014, following 15 months of multi-stakeholder consultations and forums, the One Nova Scotia Commission delivered The Report of the Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy. NSCC was part of the consultation process and welcomed the call to provide our Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives to the provincial action team. NSCC along with post-secondary partners, with such noted initiatives as Innovation Hubs and promotion of entrepreneurship, will catalyze the imperative to grow the economy "while balancing growth and environmental objectives, linking green economy perspectives to plans for creating jobs and wealth ...", "Shaping Our New Economy Together" will require shared leadership, understanding, capacity building, collaboration and "concerted action among different groups, across different economic sectors and regions with differing interests."
The NSCC is engaged in development and review of Provincial legislation that relates to sustainability. As an example, in 2007, the provincial government established the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act (EGSPA), which reinforces the importance of integrating environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. In 2012, at the five-year milestone, a legislated public review of the Act was held. NSCC was invited to participate in this review. A group from various departments at NSCC met to establish a formal response to the Minister's Round Table on Environment and Sustainable Prosperity.
Additionally, from 2013-2016 NSCC was a Board member for Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), and on the subcommittee for the development of BOMA BEST Version 3.0. BOMA BEST is the building operations reporting tool that is the national standard for building environmental performance. This tool sets the standards for waste management, energy consumption, building emissions, and the quality of the indoor environment. NSCC has been BOMA BEST certified since 2009, and has been actively leading the way in developing these standards.

Nova Scotia very recently announced that a carbon cap and trade system will be developed for implementation in 2018. This system will be developed through a process of industry consultation. NSCC has stated our position to the province that we will be involved in this process.
