Our three NSCC campuses located in the Annapolis Valley Region in Nova Scotia put on a trade show every year called 'Sustainability Days.' It is a very unique event where we promote various aspects of sustainability in that region.
At the event there are booths set up from various vendors such as: Efficiency Nova Scotia, Bag to Earth, Valley Waste Resource, Local Farm Produce, Clean Annapolis River Project, Fitness and Health vendors and much more.
The local farmers market provides a voucher to students to allow them to get free local produce at their booth.
This event is open to the public as well so it not only aids in educating staff and students but also the local community.
A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):
One of the most measurable aspects of this program is the exceptional performance of waste management at the Annapolis Valley campuses. These 3 campuses have been the highest performers of waste diversion of our 17 sites that are audited every year. During our baseline waste audit year in 2011 they scored an average of 72% of their waste being diverted from the landfill, in 2015 they average a diversion rate of 92%. These campuses continue to excel in waste management each year and usually are the first campuses to initiate new ideas and sustainability projects.
