BOMABEST is an assessment and certification program for commercial buildings in Canada. The program provides a consistent framework for owners and managers to critically assess six key areas of environmental performance and management: Energy, Water, Waste Reduction and Site, Emissions and Effluents, Indoor Environment, and Environmental Management System. It has five levels of Certification; Certified, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The BOMABEST assessment modules provide an on-line questionnaire specific to building types; access energy and environmental performance and management of the building. An on-site tour of the assessed building is conducted by third-party verification. Nova Scotia Community College currently has two buildings rated Silver (70-79%), 11 buildings rated Gold (80-89%), and two buildings rated Platinum (90-100%).

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:

Although the NSCC does not yet have any buildings certified through LEED for Existing Buildings, all of our buildings are BOMABEST Certified.

BOMABEST is the platform that NSCC has selected to measure and benchmark environmental best practices across all of our campuses. In 2009 all NSCC buildings were certified, then recertified in 2012, and again in 2016.
