A brief description of the institution’s indoor air quality program(s) (including information about regular auditing or monitoring, mechanisms for occupants to register complaints, and action plans):

Through NSCC’s BOMABEST certification program, every campus operates under an Indoor Air Quality Management Plan. An example plan is presented below….

NSCC Akerley Campus Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Complaints Management Plan:

1.0 NSCC Akerley Campus IAQ Statement
The NSCC Akerley Campus recognizes that maintaining good indoor air quality is an integral component of providing a safe and productive environment for staff and students. Facilities Management will ensure that HVAC systems, localized ventilation, and the Building Automated System (BAS) are maintained and working at peak efficiency to deliver air quality that is within acceptable standards.
Understanding that individuals may have personal sensitivities or preferences for air quality parameters that are not within BAS set-points (such as temperature), this Plan shall be implemented to ensure that IAQ complaints / requests are addressed immediately.

2.0 IAQ Complaints Management Process
Indoor air quality complaints / requests are submitted to Facilities Management either in person, over the phone, or directly through a Facilities Work Request. If the request is related to temperature, Facilities Management can over-ride the BAS and adjust the temperature for the particular area, as requested. The temperature and other parameters measured through the BAS (such as CO2 and humidity) will be monitored to ensure that the over-ride set-points are achieved.
If IAQ complaints arise where the parameter of concern is unknown, an indoor air quality assessment will be completed within the area. Depending on the situation, this assessment will either be completed in-house, or by an independent consultant. Depending on the findings of the assessment, if warranted, remedial measure will be taken to ensure that acceptable IAQ is achieved.
Where complaints require an investigation by an independent consultant, or if complaints relate to compromised/damaged infrastructure, a Work Order is generated to address the issue. The person responsible is identified on the work order. Once the work has been completed, the person responsible signs off on the work, and the task is logged electronically.

3.0 Target
It is the target of the NSCC Akerley Campus Operations Management to respond to IAQ complaints within 24 hours of receiving a formal complaint / request.

Additionally, during the heating season, NSCC facilities staff use Q-Trak air quality monitoring devices are used to conduct indoor air quality surveys at all NSCC campuses. Any areas of concern are then flagged for investigation and further indoor air quality assessment.
