A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
At all NSCC campuses parking passes are required to park on site. The passes are divided into student (1-driver), student (carpool) and staff.
For the 3 of the NSCC campuses located in the greater Halifax region of Nova Scotia, public transit passes are given to every student.
The other 10 campuses are located in rural areas of the province with minimal alternative options.
The number of different passes sold at each campus were used as a baseline for choice of transportation of the student population to determine who is carpooling and who is driving with on passenger in the vehicle. From there, patterns of each campus (taking into consideration the location of the campus and accessibility of alternative transportation) were assessed and number of students and their choice of transportation were deduced.
