School of Civil & Environmental Engineering sustainability learning outcomes include: 1) an ability to design systems, components, or processes to meet desired needs within realistic constraints (such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health, safety, and sustainability), 2) an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams, an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility, 3) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context, contributing to society through the practice of civil engineering in a variety of contexts, including the protection of public health and safety and the development of sustainable engineering solutions.
An outcome of the School of Architecture is an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

Issues in Environmental Sustainability (required for Environmental Science Graduate Program): This 3 credit-hour graduate course examines the relationships between humans and nature and their impact on the quality of life of future generations through case study, field trips, guest speakers, and discussion. Learn principles of sustainability, explore methods of environmental stewardship that can contribute to sustainability, and find out what you can do in your daily life to reduce your own ecological footprint.
At the conclusion of this course, students should know about and be able to discuss:
• The three principles of sustainability;
• Five subthemes that lead to sustainability;
• Issues associated with environmental worldviews and ethics.
In addition, this course is designed to challenge students to examine themselves as individuals within the environment and adjust their daily lives to reduce their ecological footprint.
