ER-18: Sustainability Research Incentives

Old Dominion University is classified as a Carnegie Research Institution with "high" research activity. The goal of the Undergraduate Research Program is to promote and facilitate the inclusion of undergraduates in ODU's active research community to expand students' educational experience, and preparation for graduate programs and the job market. The goal is to support mentored research activities that connect our top undergraduate students with faculty who are active in research. New opportunities and funded research programs will be updated frequently. Faculty members serve as research mentors for undergraduate students. Research courses and opportunities are provided in participating departments and majors. Travel grants, research fellowship grants, course credit, and stipends are incentives for undergraduate research.

Climate Change - Sea Level Rise Initiative
The Climate Change – Sea Level Rise initiative is an effort to identify the multi-faceted impact climate change and rising sea levels will have on our region. The initiative is led by James V. Koch, Board of Visitors Professor of Economics and President Emeritus, and Oceanography Professor Dr. Larry Atkinson. The project pulls together the university and region's foremost experts to find solutions to the anticipated effects on the economy, housing, ports, and infrastructure. Facilitating faculty engagement in Climate Change and Sea Level Rise research is a priority of Old Dominion University. Our goal is to make ODU a recognized leader in this area in order to address the challenges that will significantly affect not only the Hampton Roads region but also the country and the world. To achieve this goal, we seek to strengthen relationships among faculty, colleges, centers and departments working in and across disciplines that address Climate Change and Sea Level Rise impacts.
In an effort to promote and support faculty interested in forming teams to address Climate Change and Sea Level Rise issues facing a metropolitan environment, the Office of Research accepted proposals for short-term seed funding.

The 2011 On Target: Case Study Competition was hosted by the Career Management Center and the Undergraduate Research Program.
Student teams were asked to resolve a corporate problem that spans several functional areas. This year's topic was Sustainability. Teams addressed the following questions about sustainable business practices at TARGET; 1) how can Target fulfill the guests' wants to support sustainability through its product offerings? 2) How can Target communicate its commitment to sustainability in a meaningful, clear and concise way? Each team prepared a written executive report. Based on an evaluation of the reports, the top three teams presented their conclusions in 15-minute presentations before a panel of Target Corporation Executives.
