A brief description of the child care program, policy, or practice:

The Old Dominion University Child Development Center is a full-service full-time child care program offering early care and education to children ages 8 weeks through Kindergarten. Each lead teacher has a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and is assisted by graduate level practicum students from early childhood or elementary education. Most classroom teaching assistants are ODU students, many majoring in education or a related field, who enjoying working with young children. The staff works collaboratively with the Teaching and Learning department, Communication Disorders and Special Education as well as other university departments to offer each child a wide variety of resources.
The dynamic curriculum is based on the latest research and methods for early childhood education. The staff and faculty focus on the development of the whole child, paying particular attention to the individual needs and developmental levels of each child. The staff and faculty help children to develop positive relationships, while providing a rich and inviting environment for children to explore and make sense of the world around them. Developing language skills and strong bodies are also a large part of our daily activities. The rich and carefully planned environment allows children the opportunity to play, explore, create and grow while building a strong foundation for life-long learning.

Admission to the program is open to faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members. Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in the Child Development Center must fill out the application form and bring it, mail it or fax it to the address or phone number on the form. Application forms will be listed in the waiting pool by the date they are received. Admissions are based on availability of spaces, age and developmental readiness for the placement. Priority in moving children into open spaces is given to children who are currently enrolled in the centers. When openings become available, ODU faculty and staff who have the appropriate aged children for the openings and have submitted the earliest applications have priority.
