A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Pace has a Universal Waste Management Plan and Hazardous Waste Reference Manual which are in the process of being updated and reviewed. The Hazardous Waste Reference Manual provides information on the guidelines and procedures for the proper management of hazardous waste on campus. The Universal Waste Management plan provided information and guidelines on the proper management of Universal Waste. Non-regulated chemical wastes are disposed appropriately.
The Hazardous Waste Reference Manual speaks about ways of waste minimization. Such as:
~ Maintaining a limited inventory of chemicals on hand so those chemicals do not expire or deteriorate and necessitate disposal.
~ Only purchase what is needed for the short term.
~ Develop a running inventory of chemicals on hand.
~ Reduce or eliminate the use of highly toxic chemicals in lab experiments.
~ Establish waste minimization goals within your department.
~ Reuse of recycle spent solvents
Training, monitoring waste generation at the point of generation and by assuring that non-hazardous waste is not mixed with hazardous waste in the laboratories and darkrooms are other ways to reduce waste.
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Departments that generate hazardous waste make decisions in accordance with RCRA guidelines and prepares wastes for disposal. The Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) provides assistance to generators as necessary. Wastes are disposed of through licensed/permitted contractors and disposal facilities. The EHSO helps departments ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
Universal Waste is accumulated on each campus at a central campus storage area and picked up by an approved vendor.
