A brief summary of the climate plan’s long-term goals:
Since October of 2008, we have been participating in the PlaNYC Mayoral Challenge as part of NY City's overall sustainability program. The city is requiring that all city owned and operated buildings reduce their carbon emissions by 30% in 30 years. The Mayoral Challenge program requires that participating universities and hospitals reduce our carbon emissions by 30% in 10 years.
A brief summary of the climate plan’s short-term goals:
The first goal was to establish the carbon emissions baseline levels and baseline year. The goal was to develop a plan to reduce the emissions by 30% in 10 years. Through aggressive energy conservation measures, we have already reduced our emissions by 5%. The remaining 25 % will be achieved by additional conservation measures, on site electricity and hot water generation, and solar electric systems. As part of master plan, we are closing older energy inefficient buildings and develop new energy efficient buildings. The plan also calls for consolidating 2 campuses into one campus. This move will reduce transportation between campuses thus further reducing our carbon emissions.
