A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

Pomona has a robust, coordinated program of leadership development for students with a heavy emphasis on building capacity to engage race, class, sexuality, culture, religion, etc., in working toward social change. These themes are addressed both in the formal curriculum and the co-curriculum, including community-based learning opportunities that foster cultural competence and social improvement through Pomona’s Draper Center.

In addition, the Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) offers a regular slate of workshops and topics that help build faculty capacity to engage difference constructively in and out of the classroom. A sample of workshops offered in the 2013-14 year include:
“Disability in your Classroom: Understanding Student Experiences”
“Diversity in the Majors: Where are we and what are our goals?”
“Myths of Meritocracy? Gender Stereotyping in Academic Science”
“Oops, did I say that? Creating an Inclusive Classroom.”

Finally, all faculty and staff undergo regular, mandatory training on sexual harassment, and Ally training is available through the Queer Resource Center to support community members in creating safe, inclusive spaces for LGBTQQIA.
