Does the institution administer and/or participate in a program or programs to help build a diverse faculty that meet the criteria for this credit?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty:

For recruitment we are doing two things: (1) on national searches we make sure that the diversity of the candidate pool is at least as diverse as the field the search is on; and (2) we are aggressively recruiting through the Consortium for Faculty Diversity, Mellon-Chau Postdocs and Pomona College Scholar with the idea of making these candidates eventual Target of Opportunity hires. Also, someone from the College will attend the Teaching Institute for Faculty Diversity and SACNAS. For retention, each new faculty member gets a mentor, and these faculty members are encouraged to attend the Faculty Development Sessions at the Teaching and Learning Center.

In order to provide support for future faculty diversity, Pomona College is a recipient of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. The goal of the MMUF program is to identify and support underrepresented students, and others with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity, who are interested in earning a doctorate in the core fields of arts and sciences and becoming future faculty.

Pomona College also has an extensive Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). Students receive funding to work side-by-side with professors in deeply engaging research in the classroom, in world-class facilities and in the field, both during the academic year and in the summers. Students regularly present with professors at conferences and have been featured as co-authors on papers in peer-reviewed journals. Recent topics are diverse, including: Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana /o-Latina/o Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Latin American Studies, and Sociology.
