The figures reported are for the 2015 fiscal year. The figures only measure approximately a fourth of the office paper expenditures over the fiscal year, so the total number was multiplied by 4 and rounded to give a rough estimate for the total expenditures on office paper over that year.
In order to get a representative sample to calculate the percentages of expenditures on office paper with the various levels of post-consumer recycled, agricultural residue, and/or FSC certified content, we calculated a representative sample size (represented by S) (https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/sample-size-calculator/) using a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 5%. These are standard for the two variables. We then assign a randomly generated decimal value between 0 and 1 to each purchase and sorted the purchases by their associated random value. We then sample the first S purchases, which were randomly ordered.

Of the remaining 45.6% of paper expenditures which did not have a specified level of post-consumer recycled paper, 22.2% are certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and 4.6% have other certifications including leadership forestry or are "processed-chlorine-free."
