A brief description of how multiple stakeholder groups were involved in developing the plan:

Rio Salado’s Strategic Plan is driven by the college Vision, Mission, Purposes, Core Values, Core Practices and Service Standards.

Rio Salado College, with its long history of innovation and improvement, is a leader in higher education. This is due to the practice of recognizing and implementing the principles of Total Quality Management, Customer Service and Customer Astonishment, the Learning Organization, and other practices that promote the sustainability of the college’s unique mission, vision, and culture. As such, Rio Salado's Strategic Plan is the result of more than three decades of disciplined effort.

Rio Salado has now moved into the implementation phase of the strategic plan. The strategic plan is central to the initiatives that keep Rio Salado vibrant and effective, and its six strategic goals align with the Maricopa Community College District Governing Board Goals and Measures and the Beyond Boundaries initiatives established by the MCCCD Chancellor, Dr. Rufus Glasper.

Goal 2 of the strategic plan is Sustainability. Group stakeholders (administration, faculty, staff, students, and community members) have been and will continue to be involved in the development and implementation of departmental and individual action plans aligned to sustainability.

A brief description of the plan’s measurable goals :

Goal 1: Assess and report on sustainable practices throughout the college using the STARS system. Rio Salado plans to obtain a Silver rating through the STARS process.

Goal 2: Complete the annual carbon audit from ACUPCC. The college plans for a 5% annual decrease of GHG emissions.

Goal 3: Involve internal and external community members in projects/opportunities/initiatives that contribute to the advancement of sustainability. All partnerships must have a rating of 18 points or higher based on a comprehensive sustainability rubric.

A brief description of how progress in meeting the plan’s goals is measured:

Each department within the college will develop an action plan aligned to the college’s sustainability goal. Tri-chairs meet monthly to review and assess departmental progress.
