A brief description of the institution’s green athletics program, including the specific initiatives selected above:

RIT is known for its Division 1 Men's and Women's hockey teams. Thus, we have concentrated our green athletics program on improving the sustainability of our hockey arena, as well as by engaging students and educating attendees on sustainability practices. In 2012, the Gene Polisseni Center was constructed and is currently undergoing the certification process to become LEED Silver certified. Additionally, there is a Zero Waste Initiative run by student sustainability staff members. For each hockey game, up to 15 students volunteer to stand near waste disposal areas and assist attendees with sorting their waste into compost, recycling, and landfill bins. The goal is to eventually achieve a 90% or greater diversion rate. Additionally, it serves as a great platform on educating volunteers and attendees on proper waste disposal.
