A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted (e.g. in sustainability plans and policies or in the context of other reporting obligations):
2009 is the year RIT established a formal RIT Safety Management Team that reviews/tracks the injuries/illnesses for the three largest departments: Facilities Management Services, Dining Services, and Housing. In 2009, RIT started to collect and track reliable injury and illness data via a comprehensive worker compensation form that is completed for all occupational injuries and illness. Extensive training was provided to supervisors on the worker compensation process/completion of the forms.

RIT is committed to ensure the health and safety of all employees, students, and visitors while they are on RIT's campus. The Environmental Health and Safety Department is charged with developing and implementing programs to ensure this health and safety, while being compliant with federal, State and local regulations/requirements. Through program implementation (including proper training) and health and safety awareness, RIT faculty, staff, and students should feel confident that they are working and learning in a safe and healthy environment.
