Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Royal Roads University actively seeks to minimize and safely dispose of all hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste. Royal Roads University also actively seeks to minimize the presence of these materials on campus. The proper handling, disposal and minimization of hazardous wastes are essential to Royal Roads University operations. All Royal Roads University employees receive training from the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) committee which meet every four weeks.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Hazardous waste such as industrious effluent is sent off-site to HAZCO for proper disposal. HAZCO also comes to the lab once a year to oversee effective hazardous waste disposal practices. Other chemicals such as acids and bases are neutralized before being disposed of. Bacteria which are grown on petri-plates in the microbiology lab are placed into bio-hazard bags, autoclaved and then placed in the landfill immediately. Royal Roads University holds a 0% down the drain policy which is overseen by faculty members involved with the development of the Capital Regional District Sewage by-laws Best Practices, this has resulted in changing the best practices protocol. The CRD performed a wastewater audit on Royal Roads University which they passed successfully.
