SJU is a signatory of ACUPCC and has calculated its carbon emissions for each year since singing the agreement. Reducing emissions is also the primary goal set in SJU's Climate Action Plan.

A brief description of the plan(s) to advance sustainability in Buildings:

SJU's original climate action plan stated a goal for all new buildings built on campus to meet at least LEED silver standards. This has since been revised to just require that green building principles be taken into consideration and ultimately incorporated into new buildings and renovations. The change was made to reduce the increased hassle of formal certification. Sustainability is still a key part of building.

SJU Dining Services has a policy and practice of seeking out local foods. Current Dining Services projects included considering trayless, increasing local/sustainable food choices, new to-go container options, etc.

The SJU Climate Action Plan includes a goal "to generate more power from alternative sources, Saint John’s Abbey (from whom SJU gets its power).
