Does the institution's GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from other categories?:
Yes

A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:

Sightlines was retained and utilized the Clean Air Cool Planet Carbon Calculator (FY04/05, FY05/06, FY06/07, FY07/08, FY08/09, FY09/10, FY10/11, FY11/12, FY12/13, FY13/14, FY14/15).

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the internal and/or external verification process:

Data was provided by SMC Facilities Services to Sightlines and they independently ran the analyses.

More about Sightlines can be found at: http://www.sightlines.com/

Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions::
Performance Year Baseline Year
Scope 1 GHG emissions from stationary combustion 3,926.10 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 4,005 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Scope 1 GHG emissions from other sources 592.60 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 255 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Scope 2 GHG emissions from purchased electricity 3,280 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 3,074 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Scope 2 GHG emissions from other sources 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Figures needed to determine total carbon offsets::
Performance Year Baseline Year
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon sequestration due to land that the institution manages specifically for sequestration 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 3,214 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of the institution-catalyzed carbon offsets program:

N/A

A brief description of the carbon sequestration program and reporting protocol used:

N/A

A brief description of the composting and carbon storage program:

Offsite: Through a partnership with East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD), all of Saint Mary's food waste is given to EBMUD and turned into energy that is used to power their facilities.

Onsite: We have a campus community garden that we do not track. It is on a small scale however.

A brief description of the purchased carbon offsets, including third party verifier(s) and contract timeframes:

SMC purchased 11,511,500 RECs from Constellation Energy Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates, from 6/30/2014 through 7/1/2015.

Technology: 100% Wind
RED Source Location: National
Estimated Electricity Usage (MWh): 11,511.5
Estimated Electricity usage (MMBtu): 39,278.94

Clean Air Cool Planet Carbon Calculator uses the California Regional Grid to calculate the Metric Tonnes estimated from these RECs, equaling 3,214 MTCDE.

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”::
Performance Year Baseline Year
Number of residential students 1,525 1,634
Number of residential employees 33 33
Number of in-patient hospital beds 0 0
Full-time equivalent enrollment 3,581 3,407
Full-time equivalent of employees 992 654
Full-time equivalent of distance education students 0 0

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Start Date End Date
Performance Year July 1, 2014 June 30, 2015
Baseline Year July 1, 2010 June 30, 2011

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:

This baseline year was established to be consistent with the overall STARS reporting.

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
90,067.41 Square meters

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:
Floor Area
Laboratory space 5,144.41 Square meters

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives, including efforts made during the previous three years:

The institution regularly implements plans to upgrade systems with annual maintenance or major renovation, for example, when HVACs are scheduled to be replaced, they are upgraded to reduce GHG and reduce energy use. This is a regular part of the renovation/maintenance plans. In addition, when new construction is planned, the institution deliberately reviews new and more efficient systems to install to improve the overall institutions use of energy and reduce GHG emissions.

Additional initiatives surrounding composting, alternative transportation, solar energy, and our campus fleet are being implemented and/or further explored.
