Does the institution have a surplus department or formal office supplies exchange program that facilitates reuse of materials?:
Yes

A brief description of the program:

The Inventory & Distribution (I&D) department handles surplus office supplies as well as furniture. Departments can identify surplus material and return it to I&D where it is placed in inventory. (They will assist departments by picking up larger items that are difficult to handle.) I&D maintain a bulletin board where they post a list of the type of material they have in surplus inventory. Departments are free to request the items as required.
(The board program was introduced in the past year but then recent renovations in the area required them to remove it for construction. The new board is now up and they are in the process of designing a banner for display.)
In the case of surplus furniture the items are disposed of in one of three ways, depending on the condition of the piece:
• maintained in inventory for re-distribution to a University department, as needed
• donated to a charitable organization as the need arises
• through a “green” liquidator who will either re-purpose the material or break it into component parts for recycling, to avoid the landfill
