A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

The Associated Students of SDSU has a history of leading the campus in sustainability and "Associated Students: Green Love and Sustainability Initiatives Student Involvement Innovation" recognizes the combined impact of the policies and upgrades A.S. has implemented since 2008. In 2011 A.S. approved two policies relating to the sustainability of the facilities they manage. The first is to be energy zero by 2020 and the second was to certify their facilities to LEED Existing Building; Operations and Maintenance at Silver level or higher.

To meet these ambitious goals the A.S. has engaged students in a number of innovative ways and the impact of this engagement on the campus culture and physical campus operations is not fully captured by existing credit areas. Since 2005 students have voted three times to increase their fees to fund sustainability initiatives led by A.S. These initiatives include building a new LEED platinum student union, establishing a sustainability fund for facilities improvements, and creating the Green Love Sustainability Program to provide sustainability programming and resources. The A.S. has also engaged students with the SDSU and UCSD USGBC chapters in LEED certification process for A.S. facilities, a collaboration which we believe to be the first of its kind. This collaboration has provided SDSU students with the training and knowledge to participate in the certification process the remaining A.S. facilities.
