A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

The Workplace Sustainability Liaison program empowers Santa Clara University employees to implement the University's Strategic Plan by fostering Justice and Sustainability programs among University departments and organizations. Liaisons engage their peers in sustainable behaviors in order to develop a culture of sustainability among faculty and staff at SCU.

Workplace Liaisons meet for one hour each month during the academic year to discuss strategies to implement sustainability within their departments. Workplace Liaisons also devote one hour of paid worktime to implement a Climate Action Plan project goal within their workplace.


A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:

Any employee can join the Workplace Sustainability Liaisons. They may have been recommended by a peer or by finding out about the program via the Center for Sustainability website or during campus outreach events.


A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

Workplace Sustainability Liaisons meet with Center for Sustainability staff monthly, to learn about sustainability issues, community-based social marketing, and behavior-change theory.


A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):

The program is housed under the Center for Sustainability and receives financial support and worktime from a staff member.

Liaisons have received support and approval from their supervisors to spend 2 hours of paid work time on sustainable initiatives within their department.

The Faculty Sustainability Liaison program empowers Santa Clara University faculty members to implement the University's Strategic Plan by fostering Justice and Sustainability programs among University departments and organizations. Faculty who are interested in living/working more sustainably meet to discuss how to be change agents in their social and professional networks, including research and curriculum.

Faculty Liaisons meet for one hour each month during the academic year to discuss strategies to implement sustainability within their curriculum and research.
