For undergraduate orientation, all first-years are required to attend the Orientation Advisors’ Cabaret which features a skit on how to properly sort food waste, recyclables and trash, and they give tips such as using a reusable mug.
Students who are living on campus receive information from their RAs about correctly sorting waste in residence halls when they first move to campus.
During Welcome Week, several orientation activities are organized, some of which focus specifically on sustainability and environmental awareness. In September 2017, the sustainability-focused activities were:
--An urban excursion: sustainability tour including the Bullitt Center (world's greenest commercial building located a few blocks from SU campus) and SU's composting facility
--A campus garden work party with student club "Food with Spirit"
--Movie screening of "Chasing Coral"
On of the main events during Welcome Week is SU's Involvement Fair, where all student clubs are present to promote their work, programs, and actions on campus to new students at SU. In September 2017, there were 8-12 sustainability focused clubs present at the fair, showcasing their work around environmental justice and sustainability.
