Every year, Selkirk College collaborates with other community organizations and hosts the Amnesty International Film Festival. The central themes of the films are human rights, social justice, democracy and peace. Films are shown at the MIR Centre for Peace and the Shambhala Performance Hall (both of these centres are located on campus), and advertisement posters are displayed around campus.
The MIR Centre for Peace also hosts a Lecture Series containing similar themes to the Film Festival. Advertisement posters are displayed around campus, and discounted student rates are available. In 2015, Naomi Klein was part of the lecture series and she spoke about climate change.

In 2015, a performance of Hedwig and the Angry Inch was hosted at the 10th St. Campus's Shambhala Performance Hall. This was a collaboration of a local production company and the Selkirk College Music and Technology program. The performance contained strong themes of acceptance and gender equality. Student rates were available.
At the Gathering Place - a facility on the Castlegar campus devoted to enhancing services and providing a welcoming and supportive environment to Aboriginal learners - classes such as "Pow Wow and Contemporary Indigenous Dance Training" are offered, and drumming demonstrations are performed.

A brief description of wilderness or outdoors programs for students that follow Leave No Trace principles:

The Recreation, Fish, and Wildlife (RFW) students at Selkirk College participate in a number of outdoor excursions each year in which they follow "leave no trace" principles. In the 2013/14 academic year, the students went on a week-long canoe trip and a 2-night winter camping trip. Some of the practices that were followed during these trips were as follows:
-All items that were packed in were also packed out
-Outhouses were used when available, otherwise holes were dug and covered again in appropriate locations
-A competition was held with a prize awarded to the team that produced the least amount of garbage on the trip
-Tent pads and trails were used to concentrate use
As the RFW trips are part of the program requirements, they would be considered "institution-governed". However, the students played a major role in the trip planning.

Two of the sustainability focused employment opportunities for students on campus are the Senior Compost Attendant and the Junior Compost Attendant. The responsibilities of the attendants are to dump the collection bin contents into the large "Earth Tub" composter, monitor the temperature and moisture levels to ensure the compost is breaking down properly, and record the compost weight and temperature several times throughout each week.
