A living wage is described as a wage which: enables working families to have sufficient income to cover reasonable costs; promotes social inclusion; supports healthy child development principles; ensures that families are not under severe financial stress; is a conservative, reasonable estimate; engenders significant and wide ranging community support; and is a vehicle for promoting the benefits of social programs such as childcare.
For more information on how the living wage is calculated go to http://www.livingwagecanada.ca/files/3913/8382/4524/Living_Wage_Full_Document_Nov.pdf

A living wage has not yet been calculated for Castlegar or Nelson. The closest communities to the Institutional Boundary for which a living wage has been calculated are Cranbrook and Revelstoke, so an average of the living wages from these communities ($16.52/hr) has been applied for use in this assessment.
