A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):

Week of Welcome is a celebration of the beginning of the school year for both new and returning students to SFU. Week of Welcome is a certified Sustainable Event where students are exposed to ecological, social and economic sustainability principals throughout the week including: energy and waste reduction, healthy and low-impact food options, removal of unnecessary swag and paper distribution and are reminded of SFU's committment to sustainability throughout the week.

In addition to student sustainability clubs such as Embark hosting information booths educating incoming students on signature student focused sustainability programs such as Food Rescue, Learning Garden, Community Kitchen, Monday Veggie Challenge and the Sustainability Seed Fund, SFU's Sustainability Office staff along with the Student Sustainability Educators engage in one-on-one conversation with incoming students educating them on SFU's sustainability efforts such as the Zero Waste Initiative, Campus Sustainability Month and the Sustainability Peer Program.

In addition to the Week of Welcome activities, SFU students staying in residences participate in Residence Orientation which places a significant emphasis on sustainability. The residence handbook distributed to all incoming and returning students highlights sustainable practices in residence and encourages students to limit bringing small-appliances, personal printers and other items that may contribute to waste generation upon move-out.
