Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
SFU moves to reduce the carbon footprint of its investments

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Strategic engagement and dialogue between SFU students, staff, faculty and administration resulted in the university making a move to decrease the carbon footprint of its investments. On November 24, 2016, SFU’s Board of Governors unanimously voted to reduce the carbon footprint of the institution’s investment portfolio by at least 30% by 2030. Furthermore, SFU amended its Responsible Investment Policy (B10.16) to address requests for divestments before its Responsible Investment Committee (RIC). As a signatory of the United Nations Principle for Responsible Investments (UNPRI), SFU is committed to being an active owner and directly engages with investment managers on environmental, social, and corporate governance considerations. As of June 30, 2017, 91% of SFU’s investment portfolio is managed by funds that are signatories of the UNPRI, and $137 million of SFU investments are managed by four investment managers that are fossil fuel free.
