Sustainability at SFU is governed by the President and Vice-Presidents. Responsibility for the planning, implementation, resourcing and reporting of SFU’s sustainability targets and activities is distributed across all Vice-Presidents’ portfolios as per SFU’s Sustainability Policy (GP38).

Vice-Presidents are responsible for reviewing Sustainability Action Plans for their portfolios, and for approving actions, schedules and funding to implement them. Information from the Plans will be compiled and published in an Annual Sustainability Report.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

Established in 2012, SFU's Sustainability Office supports SFU's Vice-Presidents, at a system-level to develop and implement the Institution's Sustainability Policy (GP 38), 20-Year Sustainability Vision and Goals, and subsequent 5-year sustainability strategic plans.

The office provides the SFU community with best practice services and tools to strengthen their existing and emerging sustainability initiatives, and lead campus-wide signature sustainability projects like the Zero Waste Initiative and the Sustainable Spaces Program.

The Sustainability Office mandate is to empower SFU and its communities to advance sustainability with strategic planning, support, tools and other leadership services.

Most recently, Sustainability Office invited the entire SFU community of staff, students and faculty from across the institution's three campuses to envision what a sustainable SFU would look like in 20 years. The resulting community developed 20-Year Sustainability Vision and Goals provide a road map for SFU's sustainable future.
