The Campus Sustainability Subcommittee (CSS) is one of the Subcommittees of the Institutional Planning and Policy Committee (IPPC) of the College. The function of the Campus Sustainability Subcommittee is to research, review, recommend, and help support the implementation of sustainability policies and procedures in such areas as waste and recycling, academics, transportation, green building, food systems, climate and energy, landscape and ecosystem management, community, diversity and equity, and communication and assessment. This includes assisting in the coordination of sustainability strategic planning and its assessment and updates. The subcommittee may create working groups to assist with this process. Secondarily, the CSS coordinates strategic event planning and collaborative efforts between departments around these topics.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

The Skidmore Sustainability Office serves as a hub for campus sustainability. Each semester, the Office hires and manages 10-15 students in paid positions to lead several campus sustainability programs. An additional 5-10 students hold academic internships in the office, researching topics like sustainable food procurement and assisting with the College's GHG inventory. The Sustainability Office collaborates with people and departments across the College to enhance and promote sustainability efforts, and we continuously seek opportunities to develop new sustainability initiatives and programs to minimize our environmental impact and have a positive impact on our community.

The Campus Sustainability Subcommittee wrote the 2015-2025 Skidmore College Campus Sustainability Plan, which was endorsed by the President's Cabinet, Institutional Policy and Planning Committee, and Skidmore College Board of Trustees in 2015.

The primary role of Skidmore's Sustainability Coordinator is to educate the College community in sustainability matters and, in collaboration with various campus groups, develop, maintain, enhance, and make visible programs to advance sustainability across campus and reduce the College’s impact on the environment.

Ongoing responsibilities include cultivating and supervising student sustainability representatives/managers, including, for example, the garden manager, the North Woods stewards, etc. The Sustainability Coordinator also works with faculty, students, and staff on various curricular and co-curricular events and projects including, for example, the student garden, composting, Give+Go, guest speakers, recycling programs, the bike share program, various energy-related projects, residence halls competitions on energy use and related programs, leave your car at home activities, the development and maintenance for the Sustainable Skidmore website and other communication materials, sustainability-related grant and donations management, and assessment and strategic planning around sustainability.

This position reports to the Director of Sustainability, and the Sustainability Coordinator works on a day-to-day basis with many people including the Director of Facilities Services, the Director and Coordinator for the Environmental Studies Program, members of Skidmore’s Campus Sustainability Subcommittee, and many other constituencies.
