The Student Government of the Associated Students exists to serve the students at Sonoma State University through awareness, advocacy and representation.
The AS Senate serves as the official voice for all students of Sonoma State University.
Students Government also works to empower the students of Sonoma State University to engage in shared governance, therefore representing the student perspective to members of the campus community through leadership and active citizenship.

As the official representative voice for all Sonoma State University students, the Associated Students appoints fellow students to serve on University committees, alongside, faculty, staff and administrators. University Committees provide counsel to the University regarding planning, academics, student life and a variety of issues.

The Student Affairs Committee shall have primary responsibility for the development and review of policy regarding student affairs at the university, including recruitment, academic advising, student rights and responsibilities, scholarships, relations with alumni, and the quality of student life. In addition, with the goal of increasing academic and social opportunities for students at Sonoma State University, the Student Affairs Committee shall propose policies and programs that promote faculty-student interaction.
The Senate Budget Committee is to inform and educate the Senate and its committees on an ongoing basis regarding the University's budget process and current budget allocations; to review the University's budget, budget process, and budget allocations, and to make recommendations to the Senate and its committees on academic and instructional priorities making claim on the University's budget.
The Academic Senate purpose shall be to serve as the primary consultative body in the University in formulating, evaluating and recommending to the president policies concerning (a) curriculum and instruction, (b) appointments, promotion, evaluation and granting of tenure to members of the faculty, and (c) academic administrative matters of the institution; and (3) to serve as the primary body through which members of the faculty may express opinions on matters affecting the welfare of the University.
Accomplishments of Student Government: endorsement of Sonoma State's Sustainability Day to support the awareness of sustainable practices, installation of reusable water filling stations to reduce the usage of single-use water bottles, and positioning recycling bins around athletic fields to reduce waste and allocation of plastic in landfills.

Academic Senate - the purposes of this organization shall be (1) to exercise the rights and authority specifically delegated to the Faculty by the Board of Trustees as well as the Chancellor of the California State University, including the legislating of policy governing the awarding of grades and granting of degrees; (2) to serve as the primary consultative body in the University in formulating, evaluating and recommending to the president policies concerning (a) curriculum and instruction, (b) appointments, promotion, evaluation and granting of tenure to members of the faculty, and (c) academic administrative matters of the institution; and (3) to serve as the primary body through which members of the faculty may express opinions on matters affecting the welfare of the University.
