The Public Access Policy provides for the dissemination of scholarly and creative works authored by the University faculty and staff for public access through the South Dakota State University Institutional Repository: Open PRAIRIE. The Public Access policy helps ensure open access compliance for federally funded research, and encourages the submission of all other scholarly and creative output generated by the SDSU community to help further the institutions land-grant mission. The policy is currently being implemented.

The library supports open access to research by installing , supporting, and promoting the use of SDSU’s open-access institutional repository: Open PRAIRIE.Once the institutional respository is in place the library will be engaging in outreach across campus to raise awareness of open access and scholarly communication issues with faculty and students.
