Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Committee
Overview: Provide leadership on environmental stewardship, energy conservation and sustainability to campus. The Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Committee is a joint administration and Faculty Senate Committee.
Composition and Appointment: Administrative, Professional Staff/NFE, Civil Service Employees, Students and other Committee members (who are not faculty members) shall be nominated through the appropriate self-governing body or administrator and forwarded to the President who shall appoint the member. Faculty Committee members shall be appointed by the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate and recommended for approval by the Faculty Senate. The Committee shall be composed of fourteen (14) members including eight (8) faculty members (At-Large), two (2) Professional Staff/NFE members nominated by the Professional Staff Advisory Council, one (1) Civil Service member nominated by the Civil Service Advisory Council, and two (2) student members nominated by the Students’ Association. The following is an ex officio, non-voting member of the Committee: a representative from Aramark.
Responsibilities: Advise President and Chair of the Faculty Senate regarding environmental stewardship and sustainability. Develop, adopt and monitor baseline measures for the university's environmental stewardship, energy usage and sustainability. Provide periodic reports to SDSU faculty, students and community recording changes in these baseline measures. May provide leadership for action plans and programmatic initiatives to fulfill its charge (e.g. energy reduction targets, recommended greenhouse gas emission reductions, etc.) and may cooperate with appropriate campus entities, groups and departments on their activities.
Sub-Committees: Recycling. Other sub-Committees may be appointed when necessary for effective and efficient conduct of Committee responsibilities and duties.
Structure, Meetings and Staff Support: The Committee shall elect a chair and a vice-chair from its faculty membership for one or two-year terms as determined by the Committee. Meetings will occur typically once per month and the Office of Facilities and Services shall coordinate the agenda and support the Committee in fulfilling its responsibilities, working collaboratively with the Committee's chair and vice-chair.
Accountability and Reporting: The Committee's agenda, work activities, accomplishments and recommendations will be reported annually to the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate and President through the Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Services no later than May 15 of each year. As part of the annual report, the Committee will conduct an annual self-evaluation assessment for continuous improvement. The Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Services shall assure the Committee fulfills its responsibilities.
