Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
South completed a cycle of pollution prevention planning and implemented pollution prevention opportunities. The best 'bang for the buck' reduction opportunities involved changing chemistry labs to use less and less toxic reagents, and then using the Department of Ecology's treatment by generator guidance to further reduce waste volumes.
Also, we switched from specimens preserved with chemicals to those preserved by freezing (then the lab techs thaw them right before class).
South also is credited as an EnviroStars member for many of it programs which deal with haz waste.
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
We use Clean Harbors under the state contract for waste disposal. Christa Colozuis, Environmental Safety manager, does weekly inspections of all hazardous waste areas and writes a report that documents any changes that need to be made.
Universal wastes (lamps, batteries, non pcb light ballasts) are recycled through EcoLights
Non regulated chemical waste is disposed to METRO under a discharge permit (this is a very small amount of waste)
