A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:

SIU parking division offers students the option to purchase parking decals and register bicycles. We collected the number of bicycle registrations and decals to calculate the percentages based on that year's enrollment.

Campus shuttle/ public transportation values vary as there is no definite way for measuring. However, SIU Public Transportation has been used 601,325 times by students for year 2015. - Vanpool/ carpool percentages are an estimated percentage as well. http://studentcenter.siu.edu/services/saluki-express/

"Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means" are estimated by using the registered bicycle registration by students with the Parking Division

"Use a motorcycle, scooter or moped" are estimated based on the number of enrollment in the Motorcycle Riding Program
