The Sustainability and Campus Improvement Committee is charged with the

promotion of practices and programs that support the principles of social, financial,

and environmental sustainability of Southwestern University as outlined in the Talloires

Declaration and the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment.

In keeping with the principles of these agreements, this committee is tasked with

promoting civic engagement, increasing awareness of sustainable practices through

the inclusion of campus and community stakeholders, collaborating on interdisciplinary

approaches, practicing institutional ecology in campus landscapes and facilities,

reducing negative impacts on the global climate, creating an institutional culture of

sustainability, promoting economic sustainability and financially sound decisions, and

fostering environmental literacy. The committee conducts and reviews reports related to

the design, accessibility, furnishings, equipment, technology, use, energy consumption

and impacts of campus landscape and facilities. This committee also develops policies,

initiatives and recommendations to promote: 1) a safe, accessible, inclusive and

ecologically sustainable educational environment; 2) awareness of sustainable practices

and environmental literacy; 3) community engagement and ecological care.
