Does the institution advocate for national, state/provincial, or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
-Recent draft legislation for both NYS and Local Law draft for NYC both hope to pursue keeping organics out of the landfill. The University is currently working towards this initiative with their O2 composting and Dining Hall Pulper.
-St. John's University is part of the New York City "College Challenge" initiative where the University is reducing its carbon emmissions 30% by 2017. In 2014, St. John's had achieved a 21% carbon reduction from base year 2007 and is on target for 30% in 2017.
-In Decmeber 2008 St.John's University became the first private university to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. "St. John’s efforts for continuous improvement involve: using EPA’s environmental stewardship programs to develop policies, practices, and specifications for environmentally efficient standards; increasing stewardship awareness; staying current with EPA regulations and guidelines; increasing involvement and recognition of St. John’s stakeholders; partnering with local government; and addressing environmental concerns swiftly."
