To identify these programs, all 88 Stanford departments were examined according to their self-identified goals, objectives, and learning outcomes as listed on each department website and/or Stanford University ExploreDegrees. A department was classified as having sustainability learning outcomes if one or more of the following criteria were met:
i) One or more objectives under the Learning Outcomes section of the department on Stanford ExploreDegrees is focused on environmental, social, and/or economic sustainability;
ii) The department lists one or more specific sustainability learning outcomes, such as knowledge of the importance of sustainable energy practices or skills to navigate sustainability-related social crises such as hunger, on its website under the section related to departmental objectives;
iii) The department has a description on its website of the uses, impacts, and implications of the field(s) of study directly related to the department, and one or more of those is directly related to sustainability.
Umbrella departments that include sub-departments, such as Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, Global Studies, and the Graduate School of Business, were counted as single departments, and not split into smaller divisions within both the inventory of departments with sustainability learning outcomes, and the total number of departments, consistent with the way those departments have been counted in other credits.
