SUNY Cortland joint the American Colleges and Universities President Climate Commitment in April 2007 and shortly after the Carbon Neutrality Committee was formed to provide a road map for the campus sustainability efforts , establish a bench mark for carbon footprint in 2007 , and assess achieving of the carbon neutrality. This committee later in 2010 replaced by " Climate Action Plan" to prepared the Action Plan and steer the various campus sustainability activities in order to implement the Action Plan which was prepared in summer of 2011. Meanwhile few other focus groups/committees provide sustainability programs. These focus group/committee are as:
- Recycling Committee- campus wide , since 2000
- Carbon Neutrality Committee –campus wide from 2007 -2010
- Green Building Collaborative Committee- Focus on Facilities and Technology since 2007
- Student Affairs Sustainability Committee; Student Affairs staff
- Environmental Science Club- Science Students since 2007
