The Otsego County Composting Project is a collaborative effort between several partners with the purpose of creating a county-wide compositing site and green and food waste collection process. The goal of this project is to divert food waste and green waste from trash streams and keep the organic matter within the county. There is a multi-year plan which includes different phases of implementation and will result in an ongoing county wide composting collection and processing site. At full capacity, the facility will provide jobs to residents increasing the economic prosperity of community members and divert at least 13.3 tons of food and green waste from a landfill to the composting site increasing ecological health. The City of Oneonta Environmental Board will begin free and widespread home composting education supporting social equity and wellbeing.
The institution provides material support to the partnership by donating meeting space, grant writing services and will be the first partner to pay for compost processing in the county.
