Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Gateway Center: A Unique Facility

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Gateway Center is ESF’s “Gateway to Sustainability.” It houses space for conferences, events, exhibitions, administrative offices, and food services. The design of this high-performance building explores financially feasible and technologically sound strategies to operate using renewable energy, produce its own power, create a carbon-neutral facility, and conserve resources in innovative ways. The building has achieved USGBC LEED Platinum certification, and received an award from the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture. It includes the following innovations:

- It utilizes local biomass effectively and efficiently in a unique combined heat and power system;
- Different than most “green roofs,” it features a very unique vegetated roof consisting of specialized plant communities indigenous to New York State to provide teaching and research opportunities; and
- It has a high-performance building envelope, including a bioclimatic façade that controls thermal loss and solar gain to minimize building design loads.

Which of the following impact areas does the innovation most closely relate to? (select up to three):
