Community Service and service-learning courses are specified on student transcripts. Courses in the Community Service / Service-Learning Minor (LCR) and the CHILL/ CHOICE Peer Health Education (WST & LHW) internships are specifically listed on the academic transcript. Implementations are in progress to create a special designation for courses meeting service learning parameters (eg. LCR – SL). This designation will be incorporated into plans for the experiential learning requirement.

A brief description of the institution’s employee community service initiatives:

Stony Brook University employs more than 13,000 employees. The institution has many programs/initiatives to involve employees in community service projects. As a highly decentralized institution, the best-fit coordinating infrastructure is a network of closely connected entities, spanning the campus and involving several employees in community outreach programs. The entities which make up the Network include:

SBUMC Department of Community Relations
SBUMC Volunteer Relations Office
SBU Office of Community Relations
School of Social Welfare
Career Center – Volunteers for Community Service
UUP Community Service Committee

In addition, Stony Brook University sponsors and supports the State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA)/United Way campaign, which distributes donations from faculty and staff to hundreds of charities all across Long Island. On an annual basis, approximately $200,000 is raised for 175 health and human services organizations on average.
