A brief description of the green laboratory program, including the specific initiatives selected above:

-All ACG laboratories are used by the Environmental Studies Program and are monitored by faculty working in close collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Sustainability. Routine checks are performed for the functionality of equipment ( fume hoods, safety equipment etc.) There are both written and oral policies on the proper disposal of chemicals and energy/water resource management.
-Students are trained extensively and advised at the start of each semester on sustainable practices, proper disposal of materials, use of water and energy-consuming stations as well as the inactivation of all equipment not use including cleaning of glassware using water conserving tactics and equipment .
-Chemicals are safely disposed in appropriate containers (halogenated/non halogenated ) and are never disposed of as part of residual waste or "down" the drain. Instead they are removed as part of chemical and hazardous waste by contractors adhering to "green " practices.
-All material obtained by the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (which operates all laboratories at ACG) adhere to the purchasing and procurement policies of the College. Furthermore, there is only a needs-based allocation of single-use equipment eg pippetes / plasticware etc,
