A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The University has sent representatives from student groups to the state capital to protest mountain top removal coal mining which destroys landscape, habitat, and water quality for many Appalachian communities. Students have protested on the annual I Love Mountains Day in Frankfort and Appalachia Rising and Powershift in Washington, D.C. on the issues of mountain top removal, environmental degradation and advocacy for new forms of clean energy.

The Sustainability Director serves as a representative of Transylvania University to the Keep Lexington Beautiful Commission which works on litter and waste reduction issues at a local level.

The Sustainability Council now has a legislative work group focused on legislation at the state level that will help Transylvania be able to meet its commitment under the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment.
