A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Student workers must be work-study eligible as part of their financial award. Student educators are chosen as part of a competitive application and interview process conducted by the sustainability coordinator. Four to five student employees are specifically identified to conduct outreach to all students and other campus community members.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Students are trained one-on-one or in small groups by the sustainability coordinator and other staff working with the sustainability office, depending on the focus of their outreach. Students are trained to use social media with a focus on blogging about sustainability efforts. Trainings may also include an emphasis on tabling, survey work, and development of outreach materials such as posters, flyers, and displays. Additional relevant content trainings are conducted as needed in order to effectively communicate topics as diverse as building energy performance, composting food waste, and transportation alternatives.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Student educators are supported by the sustainability coordinator, the recycling/waste technician, and the farm and food projects coordinator. Their efforts are supported financially as appropriate by the sustainability office.

Our Sustainability Office annually employs 14-17 students in campus sustainability work. Though all of these students are charged with representing sustainability efforts to other campus members, four to five have a specific focus on outreach which is conducted on behalf of the Sustainability Office primarily to other students. They are designated as "Outreach" at the URL provided. No other formal Student Sustainability Educators Program is currently being offered.
