A brief description of the open access policy, including the date adopted, any incentives or supports provided, and the repository(ies) used:

The university’s policy of open access to research results seeks to:
- Encourage scholarly communication and the sustainable dissemination of knowledge and reduce the duplication of research
- Highlight and preserve the results of the university’s research and increase their impact and visibility
- Meet the requirements of federal granting agencies (SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR) for access to research results, thereby promoting universal access to the results of publicly funded research.

To achieve its Policy objectives, the university
- Implements and maintains reliable infrastructure for disseminating the research results of its members, primarily through an institutional repository platform
- Asks members of the university community to submit the results of scientific research carried out at the university to the institutional repository
- Encourages all members of the university to embrace the principle of open access through information, communication, and dialogue
- Encourages members of the university community to retain copyright over their work so research results can be disseminated under open access

Since 1997, the Université Laval Library has been involved in the expansion of open access in partnership with the major international players working towards this goal. The Library is firmly committed to open access, as demonstrated by the digitization and dissemination of its Electronic Dissertation and Thesis Collection, participation in the Érudit publication consortium, the recent creation of the Copyright Office, and the creation of an institutional repository. The university covers the cost of the institutional platform for the online repository and the cost of posting material to the platform for all researchers wishing to publish their work.

Created on June 1, 2014, the Copyright Office is responsible for overseeing the management and dissemination of educational material and provides free advisory service on questions about copyright management. More specifically, the Copyright Office provides advice on all aspects of the use of open-access material for teaching and learning. It also helps raise awareness about the dissemination of open-access scientific publications to preserve and share Université Laval’s scientific heritage. https://www.bda.ulaval.ca/

The Université Laval Library also celebrates International Open Access Week every year with a series of community lectures and workshops. Since 2014 the Library has awarded a travel scholarship to a Université Laval graduate student or early-career researcher to attend the OpenCon conference. This major event aims to inspire the next generation of researchers to change the way they share their research results through open access, open data, and free educational resources.
