A brief description of how the assessment(s) were developed:

This assessment was developed in collaboration with UB Sustainability and the Office of Assessment and Evaluation. A team met to first set the priorities for the project which included collecting information that was both useful for the institution to move forward as well as meeting the requirements for the STARs application. A balance between assessing learning, behavior, perceptions and values was set as a goal. From there, questions were pulled by looking at best practices and examples from other campuses through the community site on Campus Labs Baseline and via the “Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Materials Guidebook” published by College Student Educators International (ACPA). Questions were adapted to fit our needs and priorities and new questions were written when best practices could not be found.

A brief description of how the assessment(s) were administered:

The sustainability assessment will be administered as a part of UB’s Fall MyOpinion Week. During this week students are asked to complete one of four surveys and are given the choice to answer up to four surveys. Each survey is sent to a stratified random sample of students based on academic year.

A brief summary of results from the assessment(s):

Survey results are used to determine a baseline of student knowledge, familiarity, and interest in sustainability concepts and practices. Results are also used to identify trends in behaviors and attitudes around both personal and collective sustainable behaviors. Finally, results indicate students' views about UB specific initiatives and priorities, along with the types and format of sustainability related learning opportunities.
