A brief description of the open access policy, including the date adopted, any incentives or supports provided, and the repository(ies) used:

The UCC Open Access to Publications Policy was approved by the university’s Academic Council in November 2016. All staff are required to deposit the final manuscript version of peer-reviewed articles and peer-reviewed conference papers resulting from research carried out at University College Cork in the CORA (Cork Open Research Archive) repository. Library staff provide support to researchers by actively seeking out the final manuscript version via alerts from Google Scholar, publishers and Scopus. Additionally library staff send targeted reminders as publications are indexed in databases, check and request permissions from publishers and archive publications on behalf of researchers.

A brief description of how the institution’s library(ies) support open access to research:

UCC Library supports open access to research through the provision of an open access repository where UCC publications and doctoral theses can be deposited and made available open access online. As well as providing and maintaining the technical infrastructure, library staff actively seek out manuscript files, check and follow copyright terms and conditions and mediate deposit in the repository for authors. This service was developed in response to a survey in 2015 where researchers overwhelmingly acknowledged their support of the principles of open access to research but indicated that they were constrained by time and confusion around copyright when trying to make their publications open access. UCC Library undertakes advocacy and promotion activities around open access to research across UCC in partnership with UCC Research Support Services. This happens in a variety of ways through the use of social media, digital signage, information guides, training events, seminars, and particularly during the annual International Open Access Week. At a national level, UCC librarians participate in professional organisations such as the CONUL Research Support Group and the National Open Research Forum, where a co-ordinated national approach is taken to activities around open access to research. UCC Library also provides financial support to initiatives such as Knowledge Unlatched, Open Book Publishers, and Open Library of the Humanities which are developing alternative open access publishing models for the arts, humanities and social sciences.
